Summer Fire Prevention Tips

Fire Damage
Author: ServiceMaster Restore

When the weather gets warmer, friends and families start to gather outdoors more. Summer is a time when the risk of wildfires and house fires increases due to dry conditions and increased outdoor activities. Here are some fire prevention tips to keep in mind during the summer:

1. Practice Safe Outdoor Cooking:

  • Use grills, barbecues, and outdoor cooking appliances in a safe and designated area away from flammable materials.
  • Keep a close eye on the grill or cooking area and never leave it unattended.
  • Ensure proper disposal of charcoal and ashes in a metal container, allowing them to cool completely before disposal.

2. Be Cautious with Campfires:

  • Follow local regulations and guidelines for campfire safety.
  • Choose a safe location for the campfire away from overhanging branches, dry grass, or other flammable materials.
  • Keep the campfire small and manageable, and never leave it unattended.
  • Completely extinguish the campfire before leaving the area or going to sleep.

3. Properly Maintain and Store Flammable Materials:

  • Clear dead leaves, debris, and flammable vegetation from around your property.
  • Trim tree branches that are close to buildings and remove dead vegetation.
  • Store flammable materials, such as gasoline and propane, in approved containers and in a well-ventilated area away from heat sources.

4. Practice Safe Smoking Habits:

  • Avoid smoking in dry and grassy areas, as cigarette butts can easily ignite a fire.
  • Use designated smoking areas and properly extinguish cigarette butts in a metal container filled with sand or water.

5. Be Cautious with Fireworks:

  • Check local laws and regulations regarding fireworks and follow them strictly.
  • Attend public firework displays conducted by professionals rather than setting off your own fireworks.
  • If using legal fireworks, follow the instructions carefully, light them in an open area away from buildings, and keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby for emergencies.

6. Be Mindful of Electrical Hazards:

  • Inspect electrical cords, plugs, and appliances for any signs of damage before use.
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets and extension cords.
  • Turn off and unplug electrical devices when not in use.

7. Create and Maintain Defensible Space:

  • Create a defensible space around your property by clearing vegetation, leaves, and debris.
  • Maintain a distance between flammable materials and structures to reduce the risk of fire spread.

8. Stay Informed and Prepared:

  • Stay updated on local weather and fire conditions through reliable sources.
  • Have a fire emergency plan in place for your household and ensure everyone knows how to respond in case of a fire.
  • Keep fire extinguishers in accessible areas of your home and know how to use them effectively.
